“My name is Kathryn and I was a serial dieter”
I have been yo-yoing between being ‘on a diet’ or ‘eating everything in sight’ for the last 30 years….
I have tried every diet, every fad, every new craze going and despite being a very motivated and focused person I have ‘failed’ at every single one – I mean, seriously – what’s wrong with me?
With every diet failure came extra weight (how can I be heavier after the diet than I was before?????); feelings of worthlessness; and a strengthened resolve to be ‘better’ next time – try harder, be ‘good’, ‘start again on Monday’. Eurgh – it was exhausting! And clearly – IT DOES NOT WORK.
A couple of years ago, I decided there had to be a better way and I starting researching the ‘Body Positive Movement’ and the ‘radical’ ideas of freedom around food and body acceptance. I was hooked!
I ditched dieting for good earlier this year, but was really struggling with how to apply these new and exciting concepts to my actual real life. It’s all well and good ‘ditching the diet’, but what happens if I lose control? What if I then can’t stop eating?? I’m just going to get fatter and fatter… Will they have to take the windows out of my house to get me out??? These are literally the thoughts that were going through my head.
So, I was in limbo – knowing there was a better way, yet panicking and totally unclear on how I could make any of this work for me.
Then I came across Lisa Beasley and My Body Positive on social media. Her passion for the subject (henceforth known as her zone of genius) and her straight forward, natural delivery really appealed to me. It’s not often you find someone so totally committed to the idea of helping people change their lives for the better.
I hung around Lisa’s FaceBook group for a while before I took the plunge to find out more. I’m not great in a group situation (I either freeze up or feel like I’m totally oversharing and then panic that I look like a crazy person!!!!), so I didn’t think the workshop sessions would be a good fit for me. I decided to contact Lisa for a chat and we came to the conclusion that working one to one would produce the most benefit.
I am so glad I did!
We’re half way through a three month coaching programme and I am amazed at how much my thoughts and mindset have changed!
I feel like I have already come so far.
I am definitely more ‘aware’ of so many things:
· My body and what it really looks like;
· My hunger and how I don’t need to use it as a means of control or punishment;
· My mindset and why it all starts with me;
· My reasons for eating;
· How I want to show up in the world – for me, not for anyone else;
· Foods I was still restricting, despite thinking I had ditched the diet for good;
· How diet thinking was invading my choices and so many aspects of my life;
· Why I ‘hate’ moving my body (hint – I don’t really!); and
· So many other things!!
But there have also been real, practical changes too:
· I have been swimming (something I used to love) for the first time in years – and really enjoyed it!
· I can leave food on my plate and throw it away if I’m no longer hungry – whaaaaaaaat??????
· I can happily refuse food if I’m not hungry – even if it’s ‘dinner-time’ and the clock says I should be eating right now!
· I have ditched the guilt – sometimes if I really fancy something (even if I’m not hungry) and I know I will enjoy it – I will have it, enjoy it and not think about it again.
Don’t get me wrong, I know this is a process and a journey that will take some time and a lot of effort. There are still days where I fail to show myself the same compassion I show to others who are out there owning their bodies and their struggles; there are days when it all feels too hard; and there are days when I write 50 pages in my journal and still feel like my head is full!
But I know I am changing and learning everyday about how I can be kinder to myself, accept my wonderful body for the miracle it is, and just get on with living my life without all this b***shit weighing me down!
Lisa is helping me to navigate the waters between wanting and needing to change and making actual meaningful changes in my life.
This is just a taster of what’s changed for me – and we’re only half way through! I’m very much looking forward to the final half of the programme and what else I can achieve.
So, thank you Lisa 😊
